"The righteous will be remembered forever" (Psalm 112:6).
Yesterday was Memorial Day here in the United States.
The official "birthplace" of Memorial Day is
Waterloo, N.Y., where the residents held a ceremony on May 5, 1866 and honored local veterans who had fought in the America's Civil War. Businesses closed and residents flew flags at half-staff. That tradition has continued in many
communities, especially smaller ones. The community we served early in our ministry, St. Marys, PA has a large parade every year as does Mount Joy where we currently live.
Over time the day became a national holiday. Memorial Day is primarily about
mourning the nation’s fallen service members but for many it is also a day we remember loved ones who have gone before us. We seek to purposefully remember.
It's commendable to purposefully remember but in reality only a tiny
percentage of people are remembered beyond several generations; essentially we remember only those we had knowledge of. The memory of the vast majority of people fade into obscurity in less than 100 years.
But Psalm 112 has an encouraging perspective of this fleeting life and being
remembered in the most important way. This Psalm begins with praise to God and then this statement, "How blessed is the man who fears the LORD".
Today we want to focus on verse 6 that states,
"The righteous will
be remembered forever". The highest form of remembrance is our devotion and service to God and our eternal, spiritual impact on others. Though only a tiny portion of Christ's followers are remembered beyond several generations on this side; generations will follow their example and leave similar legacies of righteous living. We can be a part of that long chain of impact.
Today we challenge you to be remembered for: * The spiritual, Christ-focused impact you are making presently. * The godly, eternal legacy you have the opportunity to leave behind. We want to follow Jesus Christ and seek to live as a righteous people according to His plan during the days ordained for us on this side of eternity. "The righteous will be remembered forever". This is a promise we want to live for! We welcome each reader to join us.
Be encouraged today, (
Hebrews
3:13)

Daily
prayer:
Father, help me to store up this vital Scripture today and all the days You have ordained for me; "A righteous man will be remembered forever"
. When I'm tempted to compromise my integrity in exchange for ungodly choices may this Scripture ring alarm bells in my heart and mind. Let its truth persuade me to say "no" to ungodliness and
worldly passions and to live a self-controlled, upright and godly life in this present age, for Your way is the best way and it is the lasting way. Amen.

In Psalm 139 David acknowledges the omniscience of God,
"Your eyes
have seen my unformed substance". While David was being knit together in his mother's womb God saw him. God knew the days ordained for him even before his birth, "and in Your book were all written the days that were ordained for me, when as yet there was not one of them".
The Apostle James says, "What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes" (James 4:14). Nearly 2,000 years have passed since Jesus said, "I will build my church". Our life (assuming in a life span of 80 years) will only comprise a small fraction of that period of time (only about 4%). That's pretty humbling isn't it? And if you go all the way back to creation it's an even smaller percentage. If you consider eternity, well, it's infinitesimally small.

Finally
today:
Brooksyne's note:
Sunday afternoon we both provided ministry at our local nursing home. We met Christine Kriedt who recently celebrated her 101st birthday. I played several patriotic hymns and we talked about remembering those who had served our country. In our conversation she told me her husband
served in WW2. After asking to take her photo which she consented to we agreed that perhaps the best background setting should include a flag on Memorial Day weekend. She carefully wheeled her walker behind the piano bench in a rather cramped corner, sat down on her chair and looked up at the flag. This was the pose she desired as she wanted to honor the many who have served our country and gave their all. Her hearing was excellent, her navigation of the walker was also superb. If I make it to
her age I'd be so pleased if I had all my faculties in operation as it appears she does, in addition to her pleasant disposition.
