Raking hay on the Old Windmill Farm
You probably did a double take of this photo, expecting an Amish man to be sitting on the seat but it's me, an old English guy! Yesterday I helped my friend Jesse by raking his hay on the Old Windmill Farm.

"Our Advocate With The Father"

Message summary: Today is a reminder that we should utilize all the services of our advocate with the Father, "Jesus Christ the righteous".

Listen to our message on your audio player.

"Even now my witness is in heaven; my advocate is on high" (Job 16:19). "And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever" (John 14:16). "My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world" (1 John 2:1,2).

Bob SouthardFor many years Bob Southard, a  friend of ours going all the way back to the 1980's, sends a sermon out each Saturday night that he prepares for nursing home ministry. His latest message was titled "I Love My Attorney" which prompts this message.

For most of us our attorney would probably not be among those listed on our top ten that we love and hold dear, unless they're a family member. But we do respect and admire our attorney , Randy Miller. As a young child he dealt with a disabling and life threatening disease. Many of you will remember the Polio epidemic in the 50's before the vaccine came out in 1955. But Randy overcame his difficulties related to polio and built a successful law practice and a fulfilling life of service to others. Just for the record we have only used his services to prepare our wills, etc. Thus far in life that's been about the extent of our attorney needs!

Randy Miller Randy has another interesting distinction. He is a gospel singer who has made several albums and CD's. He began singing in his church when he was just 3 years old. He made his first album when he was sixteen. Randy is my age and moved to Lancaster County to attend college in the early seventies where he met his wife. They have three daughters. We've become friends with his daughter, Sarah, who attends our church.

Today we are going to consider some vital legal work that is available to all of us. Among the duties of an attorney is to advocate, which means to back, champion, support, and uphold. In fact a synonym for attorney is advocate.

In a great statement of faith in Job he declares, "Even now my witness is in heaven; my advocate is on high" (Job 16:19). In the midst ofJob's deep trial he kept his faith. He had the assurance of an advocate on high!

The greatest concentration of the word advocate in the Bible is in John's gospel using the Greek word Paraclete (παράκλητος). The word commonly refers to the Holy Spirit and is translated as 'advocate', 'counselor or 'helper'.

The final reference to advocate in the Bible is in John's epistle with a description of the vital need we all have. "But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous" (1 John 2:1). Well, we all have sinned (Romans 3:23) and thus we all need the services of this advocate. A few verses earlier John had written, "If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness" (1 John 1:9).

Today each of us need to utilize the services of our advocate with the Father, "Jesus Christ the righteous".

Be encouraged today, (Hebrews 3:13 )

Praying man Daily prayer: Father, we thank you for the advocate You gave us to help us and be with us forever. Our sins are great but Your mercy is greater and we can find forgiveness as we turn to Jesus Christ. Your all sufficient merit is our blessing.

Raking hay on the Old Windmill Farm
The hay is raked to help it dry out prior to baling. If it's not dry it will  mildew. The last time I recall raking hay was right after we got married in 1976 and I worked for a farmer in southern Missouri. But that was with a tractor!

Prakash family on the Old Windmill Farm
After the field work on the Old Windmill Farm I visited with the Prakash family who are from India but now live in the states. Both are software engineers. They are Christians and face opposition from their families who remain Hindu. The now live in New Jersey and have a ministry to the homeless. After visiting the Old Windmill Farm they struck up a friendship with the Lapps and enjoy visiting the farm where the boys enjoy playing.

Donkey on the Old Windmill Farm
The Old Windmill Farm donkey is named Donkey-Donk and is quite a character with his loud braying! Note: He is not eating a chicken.

Peacock on van on the Old Windmill Farm
As we got ready to leave the peacock hopped up on our van.

Balloon over rural Lancaster County
Most of our farm photos today were taken by Ester and as we drove back across the county Ester followed this hot air balloon with her camera.

Note to email readers: For some reason I had the wrong photos up in the email version yesterday.

Richland PA railroad underpass
One of the pleasures we both enjoy is meandering through the country more or less on the way to various workplace chaplaincy assignments. Yesterday after our first visit in Lebanon County we drove over to Richland, PA and thought this was a neat view through the railroad underpass.

Richland PA Railroad Diner
We ate breakfast at the Railroad Diner , one of our favorite eating spots, partly because it reminds us of a diner in small towns where we grew up. This diner sits right along a busy rail line. The food is very good and so is seeing so many small town folk. Yesterday we sat near a group of older men who discussed the Bible as they ate their breakfast.
