Parking for Amish school program
Yesterday our van was the only motorized vehicle parked at an Amish school for a children's program.

"Impress Them On Your Children"

Message summary: Today our verse is a command from Moses to the ancient Israelites with a principle for all generations to follow.

“These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up" (Deuteronomy 6:6-7).

Yesterday we attended a "Grandparents Day" program in a one room Amish schoolhouse in Intercourse, PA (for out-of-towners there really is a town by that name (here on Google map)

Grandparents Day

Brooksyne, Ester and I were invited by Meadow Brook's school teacher, Sadie, who is the 19 year old daughter of our close friends, Jesse and Anna Ruth. We've known their seven children (7) since their birth and are blessed that they consider us grandparent figures with Ester as their "auntie". We sat in the middle row of chairs in the schoolhouse surrounded by about 50 Amish grandparents, we being the only non-Amish in attendance.

It was a delightful experience hearing the children sing, recite Scripture verses and perform several skits such as the story of "The Little Red Hen". To begin the 34 children stepped up on the platform one by one in an orderly fashion as they cheerfully sang a classic song by John W. Peterson, "Show a little Bit of Love and Kindness". This was the first song of several including, "The Little Brown Church in the Vale".

The classroom itself emanates wholesomeness. It would not have been appropriate to take photos yesterday but we have done so on other occasions when the classrooms are empty. The walls are covered with colorful posters, cut-outs, and artwork with Bible verses, educational prompts and positive sayings. The black chalkboard had large letters in colored chalk, "Welcome Grandparents".

The latter part of the program gave the grandparents an opportunity to share a memory about their school years. One by one down each row each grandparent spoke of his or her years in school. Many of them spoke in Pennsylvania Dutch so we didn't understand everything, but others spoke in English and several spoke warmly about their years in public school. Their descriptions were very different than we'd describe our public schools today, but of course, that's true for most of our readers as well.

Of course public schools have changed drastically from when they (and we) went to school in the sixties and they are so wise to provide their own educational experience just as many "English" (the term Amish use for non-Amish) do in sending their children to Christian schools or homeschool. The evil "woke virus" has infected many public schools with educational goals far different than many parents want for their children.

Today our verse is a command from Moses to the ancient Israelites with a principle for all generations to follow.

God's commands (His Word) is to be on our hearts.

We are to impress them on our children. That begins in the home but caring parents have a responsibility to see that their teaching is reinforced in the church they attend and the schools where they spend most of their childhood years.

Be encouraged today, Hebrews 3:13

Praying man Daily prayer: Father, we pray for parents and grandparents raising children in an increasingly evil and corrupted world. We pray that you will bless the many Christian schools that seek to reinforce the teaching of god-fearing parents. We pray for those who are homeschooling their children, that You would provide them with needed resources, daily strength, stamina and wisdom to carry out their duties as not only a parent but also their teacher. We pray for the remnant of teachers in the public school system who are seeking to be faithful to You, Father. Give them the fortitude to resist the evil around them so their light will shine brightly for others to see. May they not go along with worldly indoctrination just to get along but base their teaching and their lives on the instruction of the Bible. May the commandments You give in Scripture always be their guidelines for that which is presented in the classroom and beyond. In the name of Jesus we pray. Amen.

"Show A Little Bit Of Love and Kindness"  Watch on YouTube   The Collingsworth Family (Opening song yesterday)

"Bind Us Together Lord"  Video   Amish children singing in a one room schoolhouse in Lancaster County PA. Though many of our readers are familiar with this chorus the children put a little "clap, clap" to it which gives it a very different feel. Perhaps this is common in Amish schools and youth singing groups, but it's hard to imagine this style in the Amish church where the German music is very, very slow in a syncopated manner of singing.

I found this video online (from someone else, who based on the teacher's expression apparently had given permission) and the setting is much like we experienced yesterday.  Video

Brooksyne holding lamb
A couple of songs included a lamb brought over from the Old Windmill Farm as the children sang "Mary Had a Little Lamb" and "The Lord is my Shepherd, I'll walk with Him alway". Brooksyne always enjoys holding farm animals and got a chance to hold Spottie as Ester fed him while grandparents enjoyed cookies and lemonade after the program. This lamb born over the past month was rejected by her mom but is doing very well as it is being cared for and nurtured by the Lapps.

Amish class rules
This is from another school we visited but these rules would work anywhere and would be very well appropriated to modern classrooms!
