"Clothed In
Humility"
Message summary:
Let us all make every effort to clothe ourselves in humility!
Listen to our message on your audio player.
"Now Moses was a very humble man, more humble than anyone else on the face of the earth" (Deuteronomy 12:3). “Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in
love” (Ephesians 4:2). "Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He shall lift you up" (James 4:10).
“All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because, “God opposes the
proud but gives grace to the humble” (1 Peter
5:5).
A longtime friend has a ministry of preparing sermons every Saturday night that he sends out to other friends, including us. Initially he used them in a nursing home ministry but now in his 80's he is no
longer able to preach them yet he still prepares and shares them with others. He shared an illustration this last message:
Several years ago I was in the check-out line at an Aldi grocery store. A lady was “holding up the works” as she fumbled in her purse for enough money to pay her
bill. She had handed the clerk a handful of money, but the clerk was waiting expectantly for the rest.
Sensing the situation, the gentleman behind her in line quietly swiped his debit card in the machine, punched in his PIN number, and paid for the entire order. The lady looked up from her purse, knowing she had given all the money she had. When the clerk handed her a paid receipt plus all the money she had originally given, the woman burst into tears. The clerk just flashed her eyes back to the gentleman who had made the payment. As they hugged, the woman explained that her husband was ill, and that she had just lost her own part-time job. She had prayed coming into the store that God would “somehow” get her enough food for the week. With a “Jesus loves you” from the gentleman ringing in her ears, she joyously went out the door telling everybody, “God is very, very real!!!”
When I read the message I suspected the gentleman in the line was actually our friend and I called him yesterday and found out it was. In humility he had described himself in the third person! Even as I asked
permission to share the story in humility he requested I not use his name!
Our first daily text is a description of Moses. Since he wrote the book of Deuteronomy many Bible students feel this is a note from another writer. It does seem rather prideful for Moses to write the
following description of himself,
"Now Moses was a very humble man, more humble than anyone else on the face of the
earth"!
Once on WDAC, our local Christian radio station, the announcer gave a brief weather report and announced, "We have 75% humility". We picked up on it immediately and so did she. She recognized that
she had misspoken and corrected the word to "humidity" followed by a quip that we could all be more humble.
The Biblical standard for humility is 100%. Notice in the second daily Scripture text Paul writes, "Be completely humble". This is an aspiration that I suppose few if any of us have attained. Are any of you reading this completely humble? Actually it seems to me that anyone making such a claim would be proud of their humility thus negating being completely humble! It's been said, "Humility is that elusive virtue that once you think you have it, you’ve lost it”. ![]()
The Bible describes humility as being free from pride and arrogance. Jesus taught that humility is the pathway to exaltation by God for
"everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but he who
humbles himself will be exalted" (Luke 18:14).
Peter wrote, “All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because, “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble” (1 Peter 5:5). Let us all make every effort to clothe ourselves in humility!
Be encouraged
