"Tribute To A Faithful Mother"

Message summary: Each of us knows people like Dorcas regardless of where we live.

"Now in Joppa there was a disciple named Tabitha (which translated in Greek is called Dorcas); this woman was abounding with deeds of kindness and charity which she continually did" (Acts 9:36).

Early Sunday morning I received a brief text from my longtime friend David, informing me his mother had passed away . We became friends just before 1st grade when his family bought the house across the street from us. His parents were Pat and Lois and they had 6 children, three boys and three girls.

Pat and Lois were salt of the earth types, demonstrating the qualities of many parents of boomers; faithfulness, hard work, churchgoing and so forth. For many years Dave's dad worked at the same large Bendix plant in Kansas City where my dad also worked. Our moms were housewives (in those days) which is such a big job now we refer to them as homemakers as they truly do make the home deserving of the title "Home Sweet Home". I vaguely recall Mom and Lois may have worked for a time in our school's cafeteria part-time.

We moved from that area before I started high school but Dave and I have maintained our friendship though separated by many miles and across states. He was the best man in our wedding in 1976. All though the years I would periodically also see his folks. One memorable visit was about 20 years ago when my two brothers and I stopped in to see them. Their three daughters were also there and what I remember best about that visit is the honor and love the adult children showed to their parents and vice versa.

Pat died several years ago after a long illness receiving the attentive "in sickness and in health" care from Lois. Brooksyne and I stopped in to visit with Lois last summer, meeting Dave and his wife Sandy, who had driven up to the Kansas City area from Springfield. In her nineties she was as sweet-spirited as ever.

The early church had people like Lois who dealt with the inevitable mountains and valleys of life and yet extended themselves to others in need.

One such person is Tabitha more commonly known by her Greek name, Dorcas. She was an active part of the faith community in Joppa and was characterized as a "woman who was abounding with deeds of kindness and charity which she continually did". In verse 39 we read that she was a seamstress and blessed others by the garments she sewed for them.

You and I can think of those whose lives are characterized by their kind words and charitable acts in our own lives. Amidst so much despair- inducing news of our age we will receive strength as we consider the quietly faithful people in our own lives.

Each of us knows people like Lois regardless of where we live. There are many in any church like her. Little known and in many cases receiving little acclamation or appreciation, but God sees every deed of kindness and hears every encouraging word and prayer offered on behalf of others. People like Dorcas in the Bible and Lois in our modern day illustration are really the backbone of the church and a healthy social system!

Let them know of their great value to you personally and to the body of Christ as they give of themselves heartily unto the Lord. And let us seek to demonstrate these qualities in our own lives.

Be encouraged today, Hebrews 3:13

Daily prayer:  Father, keep our hearts open to those who are in need of a compassionate touch, a charitable act, or a kind word. Let it come naturally from our hearts that are in tune with the heart of Jesus. May we view others through the eyes of Christ, walking in His compassionate Spirit and His benevolent ways. We thank you for the scores of people like Dorcas and Lois who have served You and those within local churches and their communities all throughout the church age. We pray this in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Bee on flower
Our friend Nick sent us a series of photos he took at the Flower Wagon greenhouse near Lititz we shared about earlier in the week. What struck me about this photo is how similar the yellow is on the bee to the yellow flower color!
