Two top positions for city departments remain unfilled

The Nacogdoches City Council took no action this week in filling two openings for department heads.

The city council went into closed session at 6:02 to discuss “the appointment or employment” of a new City Planner and Convention and Visitors Bureau Director.

When the council returned approximately 30 minutes later, Mayor Randy Johnson announced that no action would be taken.

The position of City Planner has remained vacant since May, when former City Planner Alaina Helton left to take a similar position in Lufkin. Juan Pollette is serving as planner in the interim.

The City Planner is in charge of zoning, land use, and development regulation for the city, as well as enforcing various codes and regulations relating to property within city limits, according to a job posting.

The position of Director for the Convention and Visitors Bureau has remained vacant since former director Sherry Morgan left the post in June to work at Visit Conroe. The current interim director for the bureau is Ashley Morgan. The two Morgans are not related.

The Convention and Visitors Bureau, which is also known by its forward-facing name Visit Nacogdoches, promotes tourism for the city through marketing, historic site preservation, and event planning.
