Big Spring Fire Department Hiring Non-Certified Applicants

BIG SPRING, TX — The City of Big Spring Fire Department has faced an ongoing exodus of firefighters since the summer of 2023 when the city council reduced staffing levels from 74 to 64.

Reports indicate that neighboring communities such as Midland, Lubbock, and Reeves County have lured employees away from Big Spring by offering more competitive pay.

The challenging situation appears poised to exacerbate for the Big Spring Fire Department, as Fire Station 2 has had to shutter operations five times since Christmas Eve due to staffing shortages.
