A San Antonio Police Department officer is in the hospital after a traffic stop turned into a shooting early Saturday, January 13, according to SAPD officials. At about 1:15 a.m. early Saturday, an SAPD DWI officer made a traffic stop near NW Loop 410. The vehicle proceeded to exit the highway and came to a stop at the 8200 block of Marbach Road.

Officials said two additional DWI officers arrived at the location of the stop to assist. Two officers reportedly approached, with an officer on both sides of the vehicle. The driver of the vehicle involved in the stop stepped out of the vehicle, when one of the passengers began shooting at the officers, officials said. All three officers reportedly returned fire, as another passenger in the vehicle then jumped into the driver seat, and drove away. Officials pursued the vehicle, but reportedly lost it during the pursuit.

However, officers did eventually find the vehicle abandoned about three miles down the road. Officials said the shooters still remain at large. One officer was hit two times during the shooting. The officer was sent to a local hospital in stable condition. Officials said the officer has been on duty with the department for six years.

The investigation into the stop and the shooting is ongoing, officials said. There was no additional information into how many people were involved in the incident.
