The city council for one major city in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex is considering ordering a charter amendment election that would loosen term limit restrictions on local elected officials.

According to reporting by Texas Scorecard’s Erin Anderson, the McKinney City Council is considering ordering a charter amendment election for an item that would allow elected officials to serve three consecutive four-year terms in their respective offices. Currently, members of the McKinney City Council — including the city’s mayor — are limited to serving a total of eight consecutive years in office.

With the City Council eyeing a prospective election date in May 2024, the issue could allow some current officials to seek re-election next year. According to Anderson, one such official would be McKinney Mayor George Fuller, who is currently serving his second term in office.

The item was discussed during a work session on Tuesday and no formal action was taken. According to reporting by Community Impact, the deadline for the City Council to call such an election for May would be February 17.
