AUSTIN (KXAN) — Austin City Council voted to start the process of getting more money to survivors of domestic violence Thursday.

Council members unanimously voted to direct the city manager to look at getting extra funding for the Austin Police Department’s Victims Services Emergency Assistance budget.

According to council documents, it could help victims get things like security cameras and new door locks after surviving a domestic violence incident.

The resolution was brought forward by Council Member Mackenzie Kelly and passed unanimously.

“Every Austinite deserves to feel safe in this city. It’s crucial we do everything we can to ensure continued security for survivors,” Council Member Ryan Alter said.

The city manager has been asked to come back to council in March with recommendations for how much money should be added and where it should come from. The council will move forward from there.

“The City Manager will comprehensively evaluate potential funding sources and provide practical recommendations to implement this resolution. This pivotal step underscores the City’s dedication to empowering survivors and fostering their recovery, ultimately contributing to a safer and more supportive community environment,” Kelly said.
