New Braunfels will remove a 150-year-old pecan tree from its Main Plaza next week due to “significant decay and a fungal infection,” the city said.

The tree, which is about 50 feet tall, sits on the West San Antonio Street side of the plaza in downtown New Braunfels. It has had “a history of failures” including falling branches, which has created safety concerns, the city said in a news release

Removal work will begin at 8 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 24, and the inner lane of the traffic circle around the plaza will be closed. The work is expected to take most of the day, the city said.

The city plans to replace the pecan tree with a new 100-gallon Monterrey Oak tree in the same area.

New Braunfels trees, especially older trees, have been “under a large amount of strain” due to severe drought and intense freezes in recent years, the city said.
