Documents reveal Liberty Hill mayor expected to resign

City leaders are expected to consider her resignation later this week.

LIBERTY HILL, Texas — Liberty Hill will soon be looking for a new mayor.

According to city documents, Mayor Liz Branigan submitted her resignation on Friday due to medical and scheduling issues.

Branigan will leave the position on March 1, and Liberty Hill city leaders will consider approving her resignation on Wednesday.

A special election to fill that seat would take place on May 4.

Who is Liz Branigan?

Branigan was elected as Liberty Hill's mayor in 2020, defeating incumbent Rick Hall with 55% of the vote. She would go on to be reelected in 2022 in a landslide victory.

Before becoming mayor, Branigan served on the city parks board and the city art council. She also has a background in nursing and worked as a registered nurse at a hospital in Taos, New Mexico, and Parkland Hospital in Dallas.

During a public gathering in June 2023, Branigan was heckled while declaring June as Pride month in Liberty Hill.

Video circulating on social media showed community members in the crowd saying "Lord Jesus, help us Lord Jesus! Lord have mercy" in response to the proclamation.
