Something has changed...as a dance, systems seems to be losing rhythm, attention, focus and desire. Just look at some of the symptoms…
- De-globalization is in progress, we are moving to dancing at a distance
- Shifting attention from services to products, as travel and hospitality contract - trying to change step confuses the routine and is costly to the overall performance
- Reconfiguration of supply chains from just-in-time to just in case - we are losing that synchronicity and spontaneity we once had
- Trust is eroding between us - are we partners anymore?
- We are addicted to all manner of things and worry about the future. It is now more difficult to focus and stay focused
- We look at our phones more than our children and each-other now. Love affairs with big technology over true love with each other and mother nature?
- Emerging energy shortages may only just beginning - the dance seems to be slowing
- Everything is for the money - not each other? Have we forgotten how to give as a partner, rather than take?
- A growing realisation that this old dance is destroying the very things that are necessary and dear to us, lingering doubts about whether we should continue with it
- Covid has taken us off the dance floor and out of each-others arms
So maybe this dance is coming to an end?
BUT WAIT A MINUTE...
Knowledgeable dancers may say we have it all wrong. Surely we cannot be talking about our beloved Tango?!, we must be talking about the last SALSA!
And they may have a point. The Salsa feeds much more off of the energy of the crowds and the hustle and bustle of the revelers and, that in this dance, who your partner is may not be as important. So maybe what we are experiencing is better described as 'The last
Salsa!?
In contrast, the Tango can be done quietly, more deliberately and doesn't need a lot of fanfare and usually the connection with your partner matters. So maybe this is the dance for the future?
The Tango of the future?
Let’s remember where it all started. The Tango started in working class communities. And that life is about people and the truth of relationship, love, happiness, struggles, highs, lows, passion, learning and living as part of mother nature. Music and dance has endured, as an integral part of, and expression of, that richness for thousands of years and can live on. It requires no major technology – but desire, imagination, practice, coordination and passion.
Looking towards this week’s Glasgow Climate Conference COP-26
Leaders and representatives need to dance for real - no faking, posing, or going through the motions!
Those on the dance floor will be there for all to see - every step, gesture, hesitation, stutter, sweeping move or bold pose. Perhaps we are not looking for perfection, but rather for honest and truthful gestures and a level of commitment not seen in a very long time.
So is it our last Tango?, definitely not...maybe it is just the beginning of a new movement all over again!
