I’m Grant Symons. I convene Transition Edge to help us understand how
we can transition to a low carbon sustainable world using leading thinking and practices.
A few years back in
California a life coach was invited to help a celebrity that had developed self-destructive behaviour.
The situation had become quite bad for the individual and those around them, as traumatic childhood memories and long held beliefs caused a negative downward spiral.
It might not be too much of a stretch to argue that for many in Hollywood, having a personality disorder is part of being a celebrity, or indeed the reason for becoming a celebrity in the first place. Human traits come in many flavours and Tinsel Town seems to be a wonderful place to unleash them.
Anyway, after being introduced and patiently building rapport, despite efforts by the celebrity to sabotage the process, the adviser built a picture of the person's condition. They were haunted by beliefs that they could never be satisfied with status quo, that there must
always be more fame, power, money and attention. No one around them would ever be good enough either.
We will get to the fix later, but for a moment reflect
on our own lives. We would suggest that most of us, at some point have our own doubts, fears, concerns about what we are doing, what we see happening around us, and also what we might imagine the future to be.
While climate change, global unrest and the threat of economic disruption are difficult to ignore for some of us, many folks manage to isolate, ignore, or blank out externalities altogether. "Don't bother me", speak to the hand, "Im not interested"...and perhaps being internally focussed is not a bad way to be?
