I’m Grant Symons. I convene Transition Edge to help us understand how we can transition to a low carbon sustainable world using leading thinking and practices.
Recently Jan Rotmans of the Netherlands - professor and author of the book Change of Era presented to the Taranaki community in support of their ‘Low Emissions Future’ strategy.
Looking through the presentation one particular slide caught our attention and relates to the important, but often overlooked, subject of How well do we humans cope with change?
While it’s true that, faced with no other options, we can adapt to a wide range of situations and scenarios, this isn’t our natural position. There are many ways to consider our ability to change, most focus on two critical attributes:
- our willingness to change; and
- our ability to change.
According to Rotmans the general population fall into four categories:
40% who cannot and do not want to change
25% who can change but don’t want to
25% who want to, but can’t; and
10% who can change and want to change!
Case in point is most hot-desking sites, where large numbers of people, while free to roam each morning for a new location, will often return to the same location… day, after day,
after day! LOL
