There is some speculation that Captain Moonlite was gay.
Most of that speculation rests on letters that he left behind. Letters filled with heartfelt love for his mate James Nesbitt. Letters and trinkets intended for Nesbitt's family, which NSW Police refused to post, which is the only reason we have them.
Commentary talks about how Moonlite wore a ring woven from Nesbitt's hair on his finger when he went to the gallows.
But what those commentators don't know is that this may be Irish folk magic.
Moonlite was born in Rathfriland, Ireland, in 1842, before much of the folk magic of the Irish had faded away.
The magic of the woven or braided hair is a form of binding.
The way it works is that the *male* of a partnership takes his hair and braids it into a piece of circular jewellery for his intended.
A bracelet.
A ring.
He offers this jewellery to his intended. If they accept it, then the binding is complete.
As far as spellwork goes, it's one of the few bindings that is open and offered, as opposed to secretive and hidden.
Why hair? Well, because if you know your magick, you possess an immense amount of power when you have someone's hair.
Knowing this, you may come to the conclusion that Moonlite was *definitely* gay, otherwise why would he possess such a powerful item?
Well, if you read through Moonlite's letters you may also come to the conclusion that he took a lock of Nesbitt's hair and wove it himself after his best friend was killed. His letter to Nesbitt's mum stated that it included her son's hair.
I like to think that it's folk magic.
I'm telling you this because customs die daily. If we don't respect them and honour them, they die.
It's a bit creepy to go braiding your hair into rings for your customers. But I wonder how they'd react if you gifted each new one a binding gift of your own.
What kind?
Hell, I don't know. Your culture is your fingerprint. You decide.
