Ryan Holiday wrote Trust Me, I'm Lying about his media manipulation methods.
- Lie.
Tell the media whatever they need to hear to get you coverage.
Edit your own Wikipedia page to make you look amazing.
Send fake emails pretending to be your fans, advocating bloggers cover you.
- Cheat.
Throw money at outlets before building relationships.
Buy Facebook fans.
Add fake comments to make articles look popular.
- Steal.
Create clickbait offers, deals and scams that get you the attention you're after.
- Bake spreadability into your product.
Write press releases before you design your product.
Create videos that people will actually care about. (Not just your yabbering head.)
Think about what spreads before you develop anything.
- Build your lists. In this order of priority and usefulness:
Email > RSS > Facebook > Twitter > LinkedIn.
- Make connections.
Connect with journos by giving them story ideas that don't immediately benefit you.
Go to conferences where you can meet bloggers who could help you.
Build friendships not networks.
The first three are easy, low-hanging fruit.
The fruit rests on top of landmines that can blow your legs off. So, be aware.
The final three are time-consuming and difficult.
But they're also more valuable.
Which one are you going after, and why? Reply and let me know. No judgement here either way.
