Have you ever heard about the mysterious monoliths? If you’re normal, probably not – unless you’re a huge sci-fi film fan and just thought about “2001: A Space Odyssey” when I mentioned the word “monolith.” Yeah – that big black rectangular thing the apemen found is a monolith. But like I said, that’s sci-fi. But now they are becoming sci-non-fi, that is science-non-fiction… meaning… real. These strange metal structures have been suddenly popping up all over the
world the last few years, leaving people scratching their heads in confusion – like apemen in “2001: A Space Odyssey”. From the deserts of Utah to the shores of Romania, these monoliths seem to appear out of nowhere, sparking curiosity and speculation among scientists, conspiracy theorists, and people like you and me who just like to learn about weird and unexplainable stuff.
The Landlady” is a shorthorror story by Roald Dahl. It initially appeared in The New Yorker, on November 28, 1959. Dahl once said that he had always wanted to write a ghost story but never had been quite been able to do so. The closest he came, in his opinion, was the story
I’m about to share with you… “The Landlady.” But after reading through his own story afterward, he doesn’t think he really succeeded with his effort. Nonetheless, the tale won “Best Short Story Mystery” at the 1960 Edgar Awards. So for this Thriller Thursday episode, I bring you “The Landlady” by Roald Dahl.
I’ve been looking forward to cracking open this one, because it’s from a book I received recently from my bride, Robin. She was at an estate sale and came across something she immediately knew I’d want… a book entitled “Alfred Hitchcock Presents A Month of Mystery”. It’s very much like his TV show where he shared short stories
from numerous authors. This anthology was published in 1969, with stories dating back as far as 1936. You’ll most definitely be hearing more of these in future episodes because I love old creepy stories like these. In this episode it’s a story by Gerald Kersh originally published in 1968. It’s called “Crooked Bone”.
Greenwood Avenue featured luxury shops, restaurants, movie theaters, a library, pool halls and nightclubs… until late May and early June of 1921. Then a brutal race riot took place in this suburb of Tulsa, Oklahoma. Which is tragicallyironic, watching the news and seeing what is happening all over the USA today. You could almost think that nothing has
changed. We’ll look at what happened in Greenwood, Oklahoma over 100 years ago.
