Hello again , I hope you are keeping well? Today as we have another look at Relinquishment in the context of Deep Adaptation, I would also like to introduce you to the work of Kimberley Hare; she
joins Deep Adaptation to the Three Principles understanding as we face climate change. All this year we've been looking at aspects of each of the 4Rs of Deep Adaptation which considers ways we might best live with the enormous disruption that even now we are seeing with climate change. Relinquishment might sound a bit hard, with its overtones of giving things up, but read on, as we can find a sort of freedom in this process. What I mean is that it can actually do us good to give up certain things, even if it doesn't seem like it at the the time. So here are a couple more things that people working in the Deep
Adaptation area have thought about that could be good to relinquish, while we still have the choice to do so. The first is the idea of Instant Gratification! These days we can order online more or less anything we want and even, as I now notice for groceries at Tesco's, you can have it
delivered within the hour. And we can borrow money easily and have the things we can't yet afford NOW - why wait? There are downsides to this, such as stress on the workers who provide this instant delivery, extra emissions in delivery vehicles, all the problems that uncontrolled debt can cause to families and individuals, but there's a positive message as well to not having things straight away. I would like to share an example of this from my own family. When one of my daughters was about eight, she wanted to get me a birthday present, and schemed secretly with her dad to save up and get me a jewellery box. When I received it and heard how she had saved up from her pocket money for weeks, I was really grateful and touched, and to this day it remains one of the most memorable presents I've had from my children. Its value was enhanced by the waiting and preparation! The second idea is that of unlimited growth - on a finite planet doesn't it seem obvious that this is impossible? There are several economic models that promise better than that, such as Doughnut Economics and Circulab, all based on the idea of not exceeding our natural resources. Doesn't it make sense to relinquish unlimited growth whilst we
still have some choice as to how? I was privileged to meet Kimberley a couple of years ago in the context of exploring Three Principles and how they work with facing climate change. She does a huge amount of work in this area, with individuals and organisations such as local councils. I want to draw your attention to the four day retreats that she facilitates from time to time, at no charge, to explore our interconnected predicaments with resilience, courage and creativity. There is another planned for October and you can see the details here. In Kimberley's words, it is 'designed to support you in being able to stand tall and look our interconnected predicaments in the face – from a place of courage, clarity, resilience and creativity.
To deepen your inquiry into what matters most now'. I hope there are still some places left so that you can go. You probably know that if you eat the wrong ones you could at best go on a trippy trip and at worst get poisoned, but did you also know that mushrooms are the future of packaging that won't
clog up the Earth with rubbish for years to come? I was intrigued to find that you can grow packaging for all sorts of things, in any shape, without using plastic, simply from the mycelial structure of fungi. After use it can simply be composted back into soil. This is really the way to go! You can find out about it here. Well I think that will do for now ! If there’s something else you’re seriously interested in, let me know by replying to this email and I’ll do my
best to find out about it for you. Why not also keep in touch with me on my main list too: go here (updated links) to subscribe safely. As ever, you can see previous issues of this newsletter in the archive here, to better appreciate the context. You can subscribe there too if you haven't already. (Tip: All best viewed in landscape if you're on your mobile.) Meanwhile, please spread the word and share this email, as it's so urgent now. Stay well, keep safe, and I'll be in touch again in a couple of weeks, mostly the first and third Mondays of each month. All best wishes, Barbara If you don't already know me, you might be wondering who I am and what moves me to create this series. Well, I am an accredited executive and personal Coach,
which basically means I help people to think deeply about their own personal situations and then to act on their thinking.
I have a particular interest in well-being, resilience and effectiveness, and in recent years I've become personally and shockingly aware of the climate emergency and related issues. I'm not a climate or sustainability expert - just a very concerned human.
And so, with many coaching colleagues, including Synergy Global, I want to do what I can to spread information, inspire hope and encourage action. See the buttons above for more.
