Welcome to volume 2 of The Catch 22 Newsletter
I don’t want to be accused of having my head stuck in the sand. So I’m going to dive in and speak to the most obvious catch 22 we're now facing in America. With the presidential election coming up in a few more days, stress, frustration, fear and anxiety might be scooching up to an all-time high.
If you feel like you're stuck between a rock and a hard place (our definition of a catch 22), it might be helpful to approach what's going on from that perspective. Remember, a Catch-22 is simply a paradoxical situation with no apparent way out. And that’s because the situation has contradictory rules or considerations that are illogical and keeping you trapped in it.
In addition, here's two simple tools you can use to get a handle on your stress and emotional reactivity – just in case your emotions might be chomping at the bit to be expressed.
Two Techniques To Help You Relax
When you start to feel like your emotional turmoil is getting too intense, do one or both of the following:
1) Notice where you're feeling your emotions in your body - head, chest, arms, hands, legs, etc. Use the following instructions and try to make the feeling in your body as strong as you can. Yes, it’s counter-intuitive. And still, it works to help you feel less reactive.
2) You’re going to follow the same instructions again. But this time with one addition.
In both scenarios, you’re supposed to wallow in the stress and anxiety that the thought of politics is generating. I know it seems counterintuitive, but give it a try.
These two tools from the field of Energy Psychology work to reduce the intensity of that emotional explosion that's wanting to happen.
Don't try to change anything when you’re doing the two techniques. Just continue with the same internal dialogue and images that are behind the emotion. And do try to make the sensation in your body as strong as you can.
After 3 to 5 minutes, stop and notice that when you think those same thoughts and watch those same images now, the sensation in your body is now less intense and more manageable. If not, do the exercise again for another 3 to 5 minutes.
