Are you familiar with the term spiritual bypassing? Whether you realize it or not, if you are a person of faith, or have
been around people who are, you have likely experienced it at one time or another. Spiritual bypassing is using religious platitudes and quotes to avoid dealing with uncomfortable feelings or issues. It is not quite the same as spiritual abuse, which is the use of religious position and moral high ground to control and manipulate another person into submission. Both of these are things we have seen in our work with couples here at the Marriage Recovery Center.
In this video, Dr. Hawkins and Sharmen Kimbough talk about how this shows up in couples counseling and why it is a
hindrance to helping couples get to the root issue and affect real change.
