To Plug In Or Not To Plug In? Biohacking vs Ancient Ayurveda

Published: Wed, 02/17/21

If you have come by the studio recently, you might have noticed that there is a BioHack Lab a couple of doors down from us. What exactly is "biohacking" and why would we be writing about our neighbor?

According to Dave Asprey, aka Bulletproof:

Biohacking is manipulating internal and external environmental factors to seize control of your biology.

Dave, one of the pioneers of modern day biohacking, uses anything and everything, from food to the most hard core technological devices in order to manipulate his body, mind and surroundings to take him to what he considers peak performance. He is notorious for his personal experiments and measurements.

Ancient Ayurveda (as written by Charaka) gives us a blueprint on how to manipulate only our internal environment so we can maintain the dynamic balance between our internal environment and our external environment in order to achieve peak performance. Peak performance according to Ancient Ayurveda is our ability to adapt to any given situation as quickly as possible.

So as you can tell, there is a major difference between modern biohacking and Ancient Ayurveda.  Modern day biohacking manipulates the external environment, whereas Ancient Ayurveda adapts to the external environment.

This however does not imply that we can’t use concepts, techniques and toys from the modern biohacking world to improve our physiology so we can better adapt to any given situation.

Speaking of any given situation, Tim and I just drove from 70-degree Fahrenheit sunny St Pete, FL to 23-degree Fahrenheit North Georgia yesterday and took a 2min 30sec cold shower this morning. Expecting an ice storm tonight while looking forward to another cold shower tomorrow morning. :-)

Here is Tim talking about tomorrow’s podcast episode, where you will hear our first chat with Zack, the manager of the Biohack Lab.
