Musings From Your Favorite Attorney
Did you enjoy your winter break? Did Santa bring you
everything you were wishing for? Have you set your intentions for the new year? Personally I had a great break! Christmas with family -
watching Connor get overwhelmed with all the new stuff - and a few "planning days" at Bethany Beach. Although it was cold and rainy the entire time, I was still grateful just to be within earshot of the surf. So calming! And here we are in 2024 and honestly I could use another two
weeks to finish fleshing out all my planning. It'll happen though. Slow and steady. We are a mere two days (as I'm writing this) into this new year and I
already feel the power of my word-of-the-year "BECOMING." I'm becoming. . . a more seasoned business person . . . someone who enjoys movement and making healthy choices. . . a person who respects and honors my own boundaries. . . the most authentic version of me. I'm already being tested in many respects and it's nice to have the reminder to fall back on. It feels like the beginning of a grand adventure. "For me, becoming isn't about arriving
somewhere or achieving a certain aim. I see it instead as a forward motion, a means of evolving, a way to reach continuously toward a better self. The journey doesn't end.” – Michelle Obama “Becoming” (2018)
Do you choose a word each year? What is your word this
year? Reply to this email and let me know - I'd love to hear what your word is, what your them for the year is, or what you are working on this year! Until next time. With gratitude, Cheri

A Timely Reminder It's January. For small business owners everywhere that means it's tax time. And if you used the services of any independent contractors for your business last year, you
likely need to send out some 1099s. The deadline to send/file your 1099s is January 31, 2024. Generally you need to send 1099s to all independent contractors or vendors that you paid over $600 for services in the course of the year on
behalf of your business. This will include people like your accountant, your bookkeeper, anyone you hired to help you with social media or content creation, photographer, etc. If you spent over $600 in the calendar year, you probably need to send them a 1099-NEC. I say “probably” because there are several exceptions to the rule for sending out 1099s. The exceptions
are: - if you paid less than $600 over the course of the year
- if the vendor is a corporation or an LLC with an S Corp election
- if you paid by credit card
In these cases, you don't need to send the 1099. To learn more about it, read my blog post. And when in doubt, talk to your accountant!

I'm continuing my GiveBack program in 2024 with a few tweaks - last year I donated 1% of gross revenue less pass-through expenses - which enabled me to donate over $1100 to 24 charities. I'm keeping
the donation rate the same for 2024, so 1% of every dollar you spend on legal services will go to a charitable cause. But I'm doing one charity per month this year - and my charity for January will be repeated in July - so a total of eleven charities this year, the majority of them smaller local charities. This way I can make larger donations and create a bigger impact in my own community/state. For the month of January my chosen charity is Pennridge Fish. Pennridge FISH (Fellowship in Serving Humanity)is a 401(c)(3) organization that serves low-income households with food, clothing, and emergency financial assistance in an effort to assist in the alleviation of hunger, poverty, and homelessness in the Pennridge School
District. Pennridge Fish is the local food bank, but they are more
than "just" a food bank. They also provide area families with clothing, school supplies, and toys at Christmas. I'll be supporting the food bank this month and the school supply drive in July.

#SimpleAbundance Every few years I re-read the book Simple Abundance: A Daybook of Comfort and Joy by Sarah Ban Breathnach. Even though it's been over 20 years since it was first published, the book has withstood the test of time in its
wisdom and guiding principles. This year on Let's Talk Legal my Monday posts will center on quotes or motivation gleaned through my current re-reading of the book. Let's start with this gem: "Today carve out a quiet interlude for yourself in which to dream, pen in hand. Only dreams give birth to change." What are you dreaming about? What changes are you looking for in 2024? Let's Talk Legal, my private Facebook Group, is a place to discuss the legal aspects of running a small business in an open, honest, supportive community of like-minded small business owners. If you are a member, engage! Ask questions, share business advice, join in discussions, invite your fellow business owners! If you aren't a
member join now... We'd love to welcome you!
