Musings From Your Favorite Attorney
We all know this. If you have a headache, you don't go to a podiatrist. And when you have a toothache, you don't try to get it fixed by your ophthalmologist. Why? Because doctors specialize in one area of medicine so they can become expert at diagnosing and treating that one thing. Lawyers operate the same way! Law is an ever-changing landscape. It is not humanly possible for one attorney to keep up with all the rules and all the changes in every area of law. So if you get into a car accident, you talk to a personal injury lawyer. If you want a divorce, you talk to a family law attorney. And if you want advice for your business, you talk to a business attorney! I can help you with contracts and policies for the everyday running of your business - from
Terms of Service to Document Retention to Employee Handbooks. I can help you register the copyright in your new book, logo, or course materials. I can help you work through naming your company, your new course, program, or product, and then get trademark protection for it! I can even provide generalized business advice and information on running a business. I stick to these areas because this is where I know my stuff, this is where I keep up with changes in the law, this is my zone of brilliance. Should you ever brush into another area of law or business, I'm happy to make introductions for you! I know
family lawyers, personal injury attorneys, and patent lawyers who can help! I also know business coaches, realtors, financial advisors, bookkeepers, CPAs, social media managers, and so much more! “The way of the world is meeting people through other people.”
~Robert Kerrigan
May I introduce you to one of my
colleagues? Until next time. With gratitude, Cheri

Corporate Transparency Act Workshop Avoid hefty fines and prison time! Get compliant with the Corporate Transparency Act! Do you know how it affects you as a small business owner? Do you know how to be compliant with FinCEN BOIR reporting? If this all sounds like gibberish to you, I've got you covered! Here's your formal
invitation to the Corporate Transparency Act Workshop where you'll learn what exactly this new regulation is and how it affects you as a small business. In this half-hour workshop, you will learn - what the Corporate Transparency Act
is,
- why you WANT to be compliant,
- what you need to do to be compliant with the Act,
- and what information you'll need to fill out the Beneficial Owner Information
Reporting (BOIR) for yourself, or provide to me to fill it out on your behalf.
I'll also walk you through the BOIR on the FinCEN website, so you can feel comfortable filling out the form on your own. In just a half-hour, you'll
have all the information you need to get compliant with this new legislation! This is a small group workshop, so seats are limited. The workshop will be held via Zoom and requires advance registration. There are four different sessions scheduled in February to choose from! Register now to save your seat!
A Timely Reminder It's January. For small business owners everywhere that means it's tax time. And if you used the services of any independent contractors for your business last year, you
likely need to send out some 1099s. The deadline to send/file your 1099s is January 31, 2024. Generally you need to send 1099s to all independent contractors or vendors that you paid over $600 for services in the course of the year on
behalf of your business. This will include people like your accountant, your bookkeeper, anyone you hired to help you with social media or content creation, photographer, etc. If you spent over $600 in the calendar year, you probably need to send them a 1099-NEC. I say “probably” because there are several exceptions to the rule for sending out 1099s. The exceptions
are: - if you paid less than $600 over the course of the year
- if the vendor is a corporation or an LLC with an S Corp election
- if you paid by credit card
In these cases, you don't need to send the 1099. To learn more about it, read my blog post. And when in doubt, talk to your accountant!

For the month of January my chosen charity is Pennridge Fish. Pennridge FISH (Fellowship in Serving Humanity)is a 401(c)(3) organization that serves low-income households with food, clothing, and emergency financial assistance in an effort to assist in the alleviation of hunger, poverty, and homelessness in the Pennridge School District. Pennridge Fish is the local
food bank, but they are more than "just" a food bank. They also provide area families with clothing, school supplies, and toys at Christmas. I'll be supporting the food bank this month and the school supply drive in July.
