How're ya doin' ?
Most people already know that threat actors are escalating their efforts. And they will stop at nothing to steal your data and ruin the reputation of you and your business. It seems like I’m writing about a disastrous cyberattack every week, and now even the White House issued new national cybersecurity guidance.
So, how do you ensure you are protected?
After years as an information technology analyst I do a few things.
1. Internet Security Software
Always have good Internet Security software.
Now you may have antivirus, but internet security takes it a step further and includes a firewall.
These days the best packages also include VPN and defend against viruses, malware, and ransomware.
Personally, I recommend and use Norton 360 Protection.
If your budget is tight, check out AVG, Avast, or Microsoft Defender.
Ensure your software applications, operating system, and internet security packages are up to date and have all the patches installed.
Cybersecurity gangs are businesses looking for a payday by finding vulnerabilities that they can manipulate. Don't leave the door open.
Never download from disreputable sites and always scan download files and email attachments before opening.
Train workers in best practices for cybersecurity and do them repeatedly every quarter. People leave, and people become complacent.
It's best to give reminders in internal newsletters and often.
4. Links and Email Attachments
If you are not expecting an email from a colleague, family member, or friend, call and check if they sent it.
Never click on links or windows that pop up saying you need to update something. If it appears to come from a department, contact them and check.
Always, report emails asking for money as Phishing scams.
5. Stay Informed About New Threats
We often hear, "the best defense is a great offense."
It is especially true when it comes to protecting yourself against a world of cyber threats.
Begin by following sites like Bleeping Computer, Threatpost, and Dark Reading, and they all report current threats.
Did you know I started writing for business websites a few years ago?
If you need blog articles or know someone who does reply to let me know about it.
