Hi ,
Happy Fall, y'all! Ben here. As I sit at my desk typing up this newsletter, from time to time I catch myself peeking out the window. The sun is shining, and through the crack between two curtains, I can see leaves slowly turning colors.
Fall never seems to be a long season, yet, so much changes. The days become shorter and the temperatures fall - at least here in Michigan. The leaves make their final descent to the ground below. There is so much beauty in this time of year... but for Jason and me, there is also a sense of melancholy that descends upon us both this time of year.
We are among the many who wrestle with Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), however, it tends to hit me (Ben) more. For as beautiful as Fall is, oftentimes it brings with it a seasonal load of depression. The days aren't the only things that get shorter -- my fuse gets pretty short, too. It doesn't take much to tick me off when my fuse gets short.
Before I focused on my mental health so intentionally, I often saw SAD as a curse. Something I had no power over reversing. But what I've learned over the course of years of mental health therapy, I can control my attitude and response to whatever comes my way. So when I feel SAD digging its depressive claws into me, I can take control of the situation by turning on my SAD therapy
lamp. I can take my dog Ollie for a walk. I can work on a puzzle and stimulate my brain. I can go to the gym and work out.
If you struggle with SAD, just know you're not alone! I'm in this with you. What helps you cope? Feel free to email us and let us know!
