MASINT is a relatively new term and it stands for “Measurement and Signature Intelligence”. - Satellite Imagery MASINT: This is the use of satellites to gather information about things on the ground.
- Signals Intelligence MASINT: This is the interception and analysis of electronic signals.
- Materials Intelligence MASINT: This is the study of materials and their properties.
- Tectonic MASINT: This is the study of how geological features can be used to identify objects or activities.
- Vibration MASINT: This is the study of vibrations and how they can be used to identify objects or activities.
There are many more subdisciplines of Measurement and Signature Intelligence and new ones are being developed all the time. It is a rapidly growing field and it is important that we continue to develop it to keep up with the ever-changing technological landscape.
What are some of the MASINT limitations?
MASINT is a broad category of intelligence gathering techniques, so it can be difficult to pinpoint limitations. However, one potential limitation that may keep MASINT from becoming the primary form of imagery for analysts could be its lack of depth perception. Without depth perception provided by stereoscopic imaging (such as that used in all three types of traditional imagery), it can be difficult to discern depth or distance.
What are the Russian MASINT capabilities?
In Russia, the Main Intelligence Directorate (GRU) is responsible for technical and nuclear MASINT, while the Federal Security Service (FSB) performs electromagnetic/optical MASINT.

What are the Chinese MASINT capabilities?
The Chinese have been using Measurement and Signature Intelligence for decades now. They currently use their satellites in order to monitor other countries around them who are not yet part of China itself – i.e., Taiwan, Japan etc.. This would be particularly useful if there were any sort of conflict between those nations and China because they could immediately retaliate with missiles without warning since they know exactly
where those targets are located at all times. MASINT tracks objects from their electromagnetic radiation spectrum which includes things like heat given off by a missile launch or a plane flying overhead.
This allows them to see everything that is going on around them at all times, which can potentially help China win any future conflicts with other countries since they will know exactly where their opponents are located without even having to launch a missile yet because the Chinese satellites will already be aware of it due to MASINT technology. It has also allowed the Chinese navy and air force much more freedom in terms of movement as well so this helps
keep peace between different nations by allowing those who come into conflict with each other less chance for retaliation before actually being attacked themselves.
