Ben Ezra synagogue in Cairo after its restoration,
Avihai Shivtiel born 1940 in Mandatory Palestine. After military service studied Hebrew and Arabic language and literature at Hebrew
University Jerusalem. Taught in Jerusalem and Bar-Ilan universities. 1972 Moved to Cambridge University to teach modern Hebrew and Arabic and to study towards his doctorate. In 1979 joined Leeds University to head the newly founded Department of Modem Arabic Studies. In 1995 returned to Cambridge University to join the Genizah Research Unit, where he worked until 2010 and retirement.
