The Accidental Professor
Janet Wolff
Jews in Visual Art Mark Gertler & RB Kitaj Ethics of Holocaust Art My family’s Stolpersteine (Slipping
Stone)
From inner city Primary School pupil and shorthand typist, Janet Wolff’s late entry into University presaged a brilliant career in the pioneering field of the sociology of art. Austerity Baby, her 2017 family memoir, includes the story of her refugee father’s internment on the Isle of Man
and her mother’s Russian-Jewish family. Her latest book The Photographs of Zygmunt Bauman presents a unique view of the iconic Polish-Jewish sociologist
Now, Professor Emerita at Manchester University, Janet Wolff returned to Manchester, her home town,
in 2006 after forty years in academia at Leeds University, Rochester ( New York) and Columbia University as Associate Dean at the School of Arts.
From a secular Jewish family, Janet’s interests have turned increasingly to Jewish themes in art, sociology and in the history of her own family. Her colourfully illustrated talk promises to be revealing and illuminating.
