. .
Sir Ivor Crewe
Why are we governed so badly?
Why are UK Governments increasingly blunder-prone? What is to blame: the system or the politicians? How can government blunders be reduced in the future?
Sir Ivor Crewe is an academic social scientist with a special interest in British politics and has played a leading role in higher education policy-making over three decades.
He was Master of University College, Oxford from 2008 to 2020, Vice Chancellor of the University of Essex from 1995 to 2007, President of Universities UK (the national association of Vice Chancellors) during the Blair Government and President of the Academy of Social Sciences from 2013 to 2019.
He has also served on the governing bodies of the School of Oriental and African Studies, the University of the Arts London and the European University Institute in Florence.
Sir Ivor’s academic work focuses on British politics. He has written extensively on elections, public opinion and party politics in the UK. His most recent book is The Blunders of our Governments (co-authored with Anthony King), a study of major domestic policy failures in the UK from 1980 to 2010. He is currently preparing a second edition.
