Forgotten Heroes: Vasily Grossman
Howard Epstein
A giant of journalism A literary genius Warmth and human compassion in terrible times
Howard Epstein's career as a solicitor spans more than five decades. He is a seasoned commercial lawyer and litigator, and has also written extensively - especially on Israel and on issues of Jewish interest.
If you have not heard of Vasily Grossman – or the more so if you have – you will know why he, possibly the finest Russian journalist and author of the Soviet period, is not widely celebrated. Yet, Howard says he is not only forgotten but also a hero, because of his integrity, humanity and ability to empathise with people across widest horizon imaginable.
This talk reminds us of a world that has been all but forgotten - that of Russia’s Great Patriotic War of the 1940s and the bitter post-war Stalinist period. In both, so very many people, especially Jews, suffered lives and deaths beyond the ravings of our worst nightmares, yet threw up a giant of journalism, literature and humanity, who had no equal: Vasily
Grossman.
