Some of the best golf drills today are ones that were introduced in the early years of golf with popular players like Hogan, Snead, Nelson, etc. Then, they have been reintroduced over the years with a more modern twist. However, this particular drill is still being used today by many top instructors.
Ben Hogan's Right Arm Secret Drill
If you're familiar with Ben Hogan you may have read him say that he wished he had 3 right hands when he hit the ball.
Now for someone that has a hook you would think that would be the last thing they ever
want. But I'm going to tell you a drill Hogan did to train the right hand to work properly.
In the Stress-Free Golf Swing on
pages 47-54 we talk about Hogan's use of his right elbow in the downswing and how he attaches it to his right side in the downswing. Just before impact, Hogan exploded his right elbow off his side and through the ball.
That's why Hogan wanted 3 right hands. To help you practice this, here's an interesting drill Hogan did. To do this drill you will need an old club (or 5) and a big open
field.
You don't need any golf balls for this drill.
So, get your old club and setup to an imaginary ball as per normal and pick a target in the distance that you're aiming at. But just before you go to swing, take your left hand off the grip so only your right hand is on the club. Then swing your club with
only your right arm. But as you swing through the hitting area I want you to release the club.
Yes, you should throw the club out to your target.
If this is timed correctly and you use the right arm properly then the club will fly straight towards your target. If you don't use the right arm properly then the
club will most probably fly well to the left of your target.
Apparently Hogan got this drill from Jack Burke Sr. but Jack taught this with two hands. Hogan did the same thing with only his right arm to groove the correct movement with the right arm.
