Rickie Fowler had
a great golf season in 2023 with 1 win and 8 top10 finishes. Before that, he suffered through several tough years on the PGA Tour. What made the difference between lots of high rounds followed by lots of successes? He began reconstructing his golf swing with the help of Butch Harmon. One of the biggest changes he made was with a little-known trigger or golf swing thought that might just help you too! The trigger had to do with a critical backswing move and is called RPB. Once you get your set up right, then you're ready for RPB. For the setup, here are his key concepts: - make sure you start with a nice stable base of
support
- feet should be shoulder width (or slightly further) apart
- place your ball along the line of your heel (or arch of your forward foot)
- hands are hanging naturally
Now…here’s the secret… Your V triangle must stay together in the backswing as LONG as it can. From this position is where you create both width and power. Make sure as you are rotating, you are pushing your right pocket back. (RPB) This is so important because once you’re at the top of your swing, you’ll be driving your right pocket back to the ball as you move towards impact. Next time you practice your swing, think RPB (right pocket back) till you get to the top of your swing. Then drive your hips forward using the opposite motion. Makes it sound much easier, doesn’t it? |
