Day 23: Darkness in the Church
Luke 23:44–49
It was now about the sixth hour,[b] and darkness came over the whole
land until the ninth hour.[c] The sun was darkened, and the veil of the temple was torn in two. Jesus, crying with a loud voice, said, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit!” Having said this, he breathed his last.
When the centurion saw what was done, he glorified God, saying, “Certainly this was a righteous man.” All the multitudes that came together to see this, when they saw the things that were done, returned home beating their breasts. All his acquaintances and the women who followed with him from Galilee stood at a distance, watching these things.
Apocalypse Explained 526.6
“The darkness over all the land” represented that in the whole church there was nothing but evil and falsity from it, and falsity and evil from it. Moreover, the three hours mean what is full and complete. For each and all things related in the Gospels about the Lord’s passion have stored up in them secrets of heaven, and symbolize Divine, heavenly things, which can be laid open only by means of the inner, spiritual sense.
