Day 28: Breaking Bread
Luke 24:28–35
They came near to the village where they were going, and he acted like he would go further.
They urged him, saying, “Stay with us, for it is almost evening, and the day is almost over.”
He went in to stay with them.
When he had sat down at the table with them, he took the bread and gave thanks. Breaking it, he gave it to them. Their eyes were opened and they recognized him, then he vanished out of their sight. They said to one another, “Weren’t our hearts burning within us, while he spoke to us along the way, and while he opened the Scriptures to us?” They rose up that very hour, returned to Jerusalem, and found the eleven gathered together, and those who were with them, saying, “The Lord is risen indeed,
and has appeared to Simon!” They related the things that happened along the way, and how he was recognized by them in the breaking of the bread.
Doctrine of Life 38
Insofar as someone is prompted by goodness, and is prompted by goodness to love truths, so far he loves the Lord, since the Lord is goodness itself and truth itself. The Lord is present therefore with a person in goodness and truth.
Apocalypse Explained
617.21
Bread means the Lord’s divine goodness, and eating it means making that goodness our own and uniting with it. Therefore when the Lord manifested Himself before His disciples after death, their eyes were opened and they recognized Him when he broke the bread and gave it to them... In the Word, “breaking bread” means to communicate ones goodness to another.
Reflection
The Lord loves everyone, always. When we love others as He loves us, the Lord is sharing His love (or “breaking bread”) with us. What efforts can you make to “break bread” or share the Lord’s goodness with others?
