The Pomodoro Technique is a long-standing method for improving productivity. Let's take a look at how it works!
In the late 1980s, Francesco Cirillo - a renowned productivity whizz - devised The Pomodoro Technique to help him manage his college courses.
Here's how it works in a nutshell:
A timer is utilized to divide your genuine concentrated work into manageable sections.
Typically, these segments last for 25 minutes with short 5-minute pauses in between.
Every section of time is referred to as a Pomodoro, derived from the Italian word for tomato. Francesco Cirillo initially employed an iconic kitchen timer in the shape of a tomato when he first invented this method.
After several Pomodoros have passed (typically 4), you are encouraged to take a longer, more rewarding break of 15-30 minutes.
More often than not, our daily schedules are planned out by writing down a few essential tasks on paper or in an application of choice.
To address these issues, we will use every tool at our disposal to create the most effective solutions.
In this digital age, however, distractions are ubiquitous.
Our productivity suffers when we are pulled in multiple directions by texts, emails,
Skype messages, and other distractions.
The Pomodoro Technique offers a liberating escape from those difficulties.
Initially, you assign yourself a task and then commence working when the Pomodoro timer begins. During this time, distractors are blocked out to ensure that your objectives remain in focus at all times.
With complete intensity and directed attention, pour your heart and soul into your task until the clock strikes.
And that ringing bell is just like the old school bell… it’s your break!
Hit the bathroom, grab a drink, check laser-focused, or do whatever you want!
And when the timer rings again, it’s the next Pomodoro and time for more laser-focused work.
I’ve found that breaking my work into bite-sized chunks like this can eliminate that overwhelm when I’m staring down the barrel of several tasks.
Because it keeps me in the now and targeting what I am working on…
It doesn’t even give me time to think about ‘what else needs to be done’.
Plus, knowing that I have scheduled breaks coming VERY shortly (these 25-minute focused work periods go fast) I’m less apt to check Slack or Skype or my devices while I am in work mode.
So, I’m not getting ripped away from work and sent spiraling off in 100 directions.
Rather I’m staying in the now.
And I’m staying productive.
Recently, the technique has become quite popular again.
I see a ton of free or paid apps and websites providing timers along with other productivity tools.
Here are a few sites to check out if you don’t know where to find some:
Tomato Timer - Super simple web-based free Pomodoro Timer.
Tomato Timers - More feature-rich free web-based Pomodoro Timer. Has apps too.
Pomofocus - Another free web-based Pomodoro Timer that lets you add tasks too.
Or if you’re all about the apps, then check the Apple Store or Google Play Store for ‘Pomodoro Timer’.
The one I use is called Focus To-Do and it has desktop apps for Windows, Mac, and phone apps too, all of which can sync across devices. That one is NOT free,
but I think I spent like $3 for lifetime access and updates.
All that said, you don’t have to be overly technical with it.
Heck, you can even do it with an old-school egg timer and a pen and paper if you want.
The point is just getting something that works.
The more I use this method, the more I love it. It has
turned me into a ‘getting sh*t done machine’ and I know it can do the same for you!
Finally, the shortest
path to profit online is right here in front of you.
To your success,
Bozie
