How to Create an Emergency Binder {{May "Get it Done" Challenge}}

Published: Thu, 05/08/14

We hope you have been enjoying our monthly "Get It Done" Challenges where we encourage you to do a specific "small" task to become better prepared that month.  It's been fun to see everyone work together as a group to get something done, even if it's something small.  It feels good to be getting prepared!

This month's "Get It Done" challenge is something that we feel really strongly about. In our Emergency Preparedness Plan we discuss having an "Emergency Binder" full of all of your family's important documents that you can grab in a hurry if you have to evacuate. In this newsletter we are going to talk about exactly what an emergency binder is, how to put one together, and a sale on an awesome system that can help you create yours if you want an easy solution.  After you've read the newsletter click the link below for the complete challenge including a fun way we are going to share our results once we've completed it!

An Emergency Binder is a very important part of your 72 Hour Kit (see our April challenge if you don't already have your kit put together).  It contains all of your vital documents, insurance documents, and financial documents in one place that is easy to grab and go in an emergency.  Here are some of the main reasons it's a good idea to make an Emergency Binder part of your preparedness plans:
  • In case of evacuation, you can grab it and run
  • If placed in a waterproof/fireproof safe it will protect your documents from disaster if you aren't home when your house experiences flood or fire
  • Easy to find your vital documents (i.e. birth certificates to sign kids up for school)
  • Unexpected death of one or both spouses (everything you'd need to manage your affairs will be included in the binder, making it easier for those left behind)
  • Easy access to emergency information/documents when someone else is caring for your children
Make Your Own Emergency Binder
