BARONI IS OUT!

BaroniAlfred Harris' quirky and delightful BARONI, a refreshingly original police procedural, is now available in ebook and trade paperback. The New York Times raves that "BARONI moves with confidence, avoids cliche and is neatly plotted. You will like this one." Publishers Weekly also loved the book, calling it "an unusually warmhearted police procedural. Smooth dialogue helps propel the twisted action to a satisfying close. Readers will want to check out Harris's only other novel, The Joseph File, too." Here's the story:

Rumpled, ploddingly brilliant LAPD homicide detective Lou Baroni is a widower hoping to get promoted to sergeant before his looming retirement. But Baroni's hopes are constantly thwarted by his venal, unappreciative boss and sabotaged by his ambitious young partner. They want Baroni to spend his final days investigating a recent murder that could lead to the headline-making arrest of an underworld kingpin. The problem is, Baroni is obsessed with the apparent, accidental death of a woman who fell five stories from her apartment window. Baroni is convinced that her henpecked, but likeable husband pushed her... and he's willing to risk his badge, and his meager pension, to prove it.

What starts out as a seemingly ordinary police procedural, with a touch of Columbo thrown in, turns out to be a delightfully clever, surprisingly heartwarming twist on all of the genre's tropes. Harris delivers everything you'd expect from a crime story and so much more, leading to a surprise ending that will leave you smiling. The book was adapted into the French film Pile Ou Face, starring Philippe Noiret, often referred to as "the French Walter Matthau," as Baroni.

You can get BARONI here... and why not grab THE JOSEPH FILE, too? It's here.

THE CRITICS LOVE YOUR FRIENDLY NEIGHBORHOOD DEATH PEDDLER

YOUR FRIENDLY NEIGHBORHOOD DEATH PEDDLERThe raves keep coming in for our new release of Jimmy Sangster's YOUR FRIENDLY NEIGHBORHOOD DEATH PEDDLER, an uproariously funny adventure in the tradition of Dr. Strangelove, M*A*S*H and Catch-22.

The Paperback Warrior blog says: "First and foremost, this book is hilarious. It's an absolute must read. Just following Anthony's disastrous showing as a weapons sales rep is worth the sticker price. For action, there's plenty. Sangster mixes peril on the high seas with numerous gunbattles and torture. Sangster does a fantastic job just poking fun at countries and their endless quests for violence and superiority. Sangster doesn't hold back, he throws China, Russia, the US and England under the bus in a lighthearted and entertaining manner. YOUR FRIENDLY NEIGHBORHOOD DEATH PEDDLER uses the author's unique sense of witty, off the cuff writing to mock Earth's morbid fascination with weapons, power and greed. It's a humorous, albeit violent, deep-dive into third world politics and the zillionaires that finance it. In other words: an absolute must read."

And Publishers Weekly says: "Sangster pulls zero punches in this wild, tawdry, and surprise-filled novel distinguished by sharp dialogue and comic timing. Fans of Evelyn Waugh's Decline and Fall might want to give this one a try."

Who doesn't need a few laughs in these troubling times? We certainly do! You can get the book here.

NOBODY WRITES ABOUT THE MOB LIKE JIM CIRNI

Mob CityWe've packed Jim Cirni's three acclaimed 1980s mob novels—THE KISS OFF, THE COME ON and THE BIG SQUEEZE—into one budget-priced ebook: MOB CITY. Miss The Sopranos? Love The Godfather? Then you're going to love these books. Here's what the critics are saying:

"Fast-paced, streetwise, and sharp as a garrote." Kirkus Reviews

"A gritty, insistent voice grabs the reader from the first sentence in this superior suspense novel. The action never lets up in this fast-paced thriller." Publishers Weekly

"For those who prefer the hardboiled genre, THE BIG SQUEEZE is a sleek, shapely model with a deep stain of irony." The Washington Post

"Cirni does grainy dialogue, fast, funny and he doesn't get cute, sticking to a style with a great sense of illuminated cliche, displaying a craft in which everything is nailed down." The Guardian
