This is a second outing for Whip Stark, who first appeared in author Leo Banks's debut mystery Double Wide, a dual Spur Award-winner and True West Magazine pick for Crime Novel of the Year. This sequel does not disappoint. Banks mixes non-stop action with wryly humorous dialog and populates his book with quirky, appealing characters. A bonus for Old Pueblo readers is Banks's artful descriptions of Tucson, from the panhandlers on Speedway to the bar scene at the hipster Hotel Congress, "where the chronically alienated gather to compare piercings." It's a book that grabs you on page one and holds on tight.

RAVE FOR BARONI

The Brash Books reprint of the 1970s police procedural BARONI just got a rave review from Crime Time UK... on the heels of a terrific write-up for the novel from Publishers Weekly. The review says, in part:

"The set up is familiar; a relentless cop dogging his man to the bitter end while a dangerous gangster seems untouchable. It's a classic hardboiled scenario, only from here on in nothing goes as you might expect. What drives Baroni and the other characters is much more complex than it appears on the surface. This is well judged storytelling bolstered by Harris's acute reading of people. This plot doesn't so much twist as U-turn, the personal drama becoming as important as the police work. And yet, crucially, there are two intriguing mysteries here that are very satisfying and the denouement is poetic."

The Seattle Times has declared Blanche White "our new favorite fictional detective" in a wildly enthusiastic review of the series. Here's just a sampling of their praise:
