First, there is no single "best advice" for anyone, whether you are
talking about writing or anything else in life. We are all different and need different approaches to success. But we CAN learn how to discern what will most likely work for us.
Consider these 5 nuggets of wisdom below--not every
one of them will suit you. Just grab the ones that DO suit you and keep them in mind as you consider any other advice:
1. Accept Your Individuality -
You don't want to write like everyone else or even exactly like one other author. The whole point was to write what YOU wanted, wasn't it? So only use writing advice that fits your tone or message or genre.
2. Prime Yourself for Success Daily -
Don't be do darned hard on yourself. Every day brings opportunities to
smile, gain insights, or forge ahead. A day may turn upside-down and you don't get a word written. That doesn't mean you can't still gain something from the day. Everything you do or experience, even if it is unrelated to writing, brings more power TO your writing when you get the chance to write it down.
3. Build Lasting Habits (but Change Them as Needed) -
Don't break a habit that works for you even if it isn't "recommended" by others. Everyone has a habit that works for them. Embrace it!
Don't find your habit is as useful anymore? Time to switch to a new approach.
4. Limit Distractions
Remember your goal. Limit your activities to what is useful for YOUR life and your writing projects. Your time is precious and usually better used by actively writing that listening to others about how they write.
5. Stay Involved
Don't isolate yourself in order to write. The more involved you are with others, whether in direct interaction or in correspondence, the more insights you will have about human nature and about life. And isn't that what writing is all about? Allowing readers into the lives of your
characters? Writers groups are a great way to meet other people AND find like-minded people to discuss writing. Click here for a full article on when and how to use writing groups, in person or online, to help with your writing goals.
