Hello everyone and welcome to December's issue of The Ripple Effect.   I hope you are enjoying the holiday season.  It's a busy time of year for everyone -trying to get ready for the holidays and close out on end-of-year projects before (hopefully) taking some time off to celebrate.

At the same time, many of us are already planning for 2013.  As many of you know, in March of 2013 I have another book coming out that I co-authored with a dear friend and colleague of mine.  The book is titled: Letting Go Of The Status Quo: The Liberating Exhilarating Terrifying Journey of Two Women Who Reinvented Their Lives (and Lived To Tell About it!).  This book is the personal story about the steps both my co-author and I took as we reinvented our lives the past several years as well as a guidebook to help you do the same.  I invite you to check it out.  (www.lettinggoofthestatusquo.com ).

I also invite you to give yourself a gift this holiday season... If you're feeling a tug towards something more, or in the midst of a life change and looking to ease your path, my co-author Julie and I will be offering a webinar series in January titled Shifting Gears; Harness Your Power To Change Your Life.  We'd love to not only have you join us but also start 2013 off on the right path.  More information on the webinar series can be found here as well as below.

At this time of year I like to not only look ahead at what's next but also take time to look back, at the past year's accomplishments.  Often times we get so focused on what's next that we forget to celebrate the success of what we've accomplished.  I wrote this month's article as a reminder to do just that:  celebrate your successes.

I hope you enjoy it and, as always, feel free to pass this onto anyone you feel will benefit from reading it - spread those positive ripple effects!

Wishing you a wonderful holiday season and I hope you take some time to not only celebrate your successes but also enjoy and relax!

Best always,
Andria

"I can't do this anymore" were the words I recently heard from an emerging leader who I coach. She was struggling with a number of aspects of her leadership role and the biggest was her perception of how others expected her to act in her role. She was uncomfortable with the assertive style and directive tone that was common of leaders in her company and more so, she was uncomfortable with the fact that this had become common for her. She didn't like the way she felt about the style she had adopted nor did she want to continue to lead in this fashion. I challenged her to recreate her leadership style by following these four steps: [Read more ...]

    Celebrate Your Successes

As we approach the end of the year, it's common to begin planning ahead and setting goals for the next 12 months.  This is a great ritual that keeps many of us focused on what we want to accomplish in the coming year.  In addition to this, it's also important to take time to look back at past accomplishments  -- to celebrate the success of what we've achieved.

I have the honor of working with many high performing individuals who are always striving to reach the next level in their careers.  What is quite common amongst these people (and most high achievers) is that they are typically forward- looking and asses their current success based on how far away they are from their "next level" or that next goal.  I have heard this described as the "elusive carrot" syndrome and I think it is a great depiction of what is going on.  As that carrot (which represents what we are trying to achieve) is dangling out in front of us, it always seems one step ahead of us and just out of our reach.  As long as we assess our progress against that elusive carrot, it can feel like we are never getting anywhere.

But, if we take a look behind us, the picture is quite different.   I recently did this with a client who is striving to reach a higher role inside her company.  She not yet there so feels like she is not making progress in her career goals.  Yet, when she looked back at the past year, she realized she had finished her master's degree, hired 12 new people on her team, successfully implemented several new programs across her company as well as completed a senior leadership development program which, not only gave her exposure to the CEO and executive team, but allowed her to present to the company board.  All of these things were clear indicators of her progress toward her goal.  However, by only looking ahead at the "elusive carrot", she was unable to see just how far she'd come and all the successes she achieved.

I am all for being forward-thinking and focusing on achieving goals.  In fact, I'd much rather do that than look behind me; however, every so often, especially at the end of the year, it is really important to take a look back to see how far you've come. It not only will put you in a positive mindset as you set goals for the coming year but you might recognize you are much closer to that "elusive carrot" than you realized.

This month's development tip:  As you set your 2013 goals look back at 2012 and document all you've achieved and accomplished this past year.  Take time to pat yourself on the back.  In fact, why not treat yourself to something special to acknowledge your accomplishments?   Celebrate your successes - you deserve it!
