There's a really good reason that girls are attracted to the
princess archetype in the first place (read about that here) - but the messages that are still circulating in our culture, most of the time, are based on cultural messages that are disempowering to our girls. |
It's true that Disney has recently started making movies that are better, with more empowered girls and better messages, but the messages that our girls still absorb come from decades of repetition, and are deeply embedded in our culture.
I believe these messages need to be met head-on, so (together with Kim of the Calgary Kids Club, who continues to sponsor the event) I came up with the idea of Princess Training Camp. It's for girls ages 6-9, and it gives girls the opportunity to play within the princess archetype, and to think about what it means for them. It's not dogmatic, and it shares ideas about leadership, friendship, compassion, and individuality.
And it's a whole lot of fun!! Tea parties! Bejewelling! And a Fancy Dress Ball!!
