At a time when the value of "short term missions" is being debated, it's appropriate to take a look at it from our perspective.
Vacations: Summer is normally a time for family travel, summer camps, and recreation/vacation activities. With the exception of occasional outings, our children do not have an opportunity to experience these things. Mission teams often bring the vacation to us through their activities with our children. This provides a much needed respite from their regular routines.
Relationships: While it's true that "one and done" missions provide limited benefit and no real opportunity to develop relationships, our model of encouraging recurring mission team visits does result in the establishment of personal relationships. Many times, child sponsorships are an byproduct of connections made on a mission trip.
Spiritual Support: Our mission teams provide examples of Christian living in action and help our children connect to Christians from around the world. In addition, team members are an encouragement to local Christians.
Projects: Mission teams have a major impact on our regular maintenance. While the funds expended by a mission team's trip could be sent directly to Ciudad to hire local workers, the teams can accomplish much more in a very short time. Plus, the opportunity for our children to sometimes work alongside team members teaches them so much.
Local Economy: Mission teams also have a positive impact on the local economy by using rental properties, purchasing groceries, eating in local restaurants, using taxis, shopping for souvenirs, enjoying tourist activities on their recreation day, and so much more!
