"Golf As It Was Meant To Be"

If you're a fan of rustic golf, you should check out the Golf Channel's coverage of the U.S. Men's and Women's Amateur Public Links Championships this weekend.  This year the events are being held on the Bandon Trails and Old Macdonald courses at the Bandon Dunes Golf Resort.  Watch for awhile and you'll probably find yourself wanting to travel to southern Oregon to test your skills on their 72 holes of true links golf.  The courses at Bandon Dunes have been ranked among the best in the world - and they're open to the public.

Galveston Prepares for Cruise Surge

The Port of Galveston (Texas) is making $12 million in improvements to their cruise terminal in preparation for a big increase in traffic. The improvements include additional seating, crowd control barriers, new screening area, additional restrooms, and a new gangway. The brand new Carnival Magic ship begins cruises out of Galveston in November. Disney Cruise Line, Princess Cruises and Royal Caribbean also sail from the port.

This Week's New (or Improved) Hotels

The number of "trendy" Aloft hotels in New York City has doubled with the opening of Aloft New York Brooklyn. It's in downtown Brooklyn, just off Flatbush Avenue and a healthy hike from the Brooklyn Bridge and Manhattan. 176 loft-like guest rooms, two-story atrium lobby and the "w xyz bar".

The Westin Gaslamp Quarter San Diego is looking very different after a complete reno of their guest rooms.  It's all so much trendier looking - with all the benefits that come with the hotel's downtown San Diego location.  Part of a $25 million overhaul that will be completed by sometime in 2012.
