R. (5) Their message goes out through all the earth.

The heavens declare the glory of God;
and the firmament proclaims his handiwork.
Day pours out the word to day;
and night to night imparts knowledge.

Not a word nor a discourse
whose voice is not heard;
through all the earth their voice resounds,
and to the ends of the world, their message.

SAINT OF THE WEEK

- June 30th. The First Martyrs of the Church of Rome.

On the day following the celebration of SS. Peter and Paul, who
suffered martyrdom under the Emperor Nero in 64 and 67
respectively, we celebrate the many other early Christian martyrs
of the city who were held responsible for the great fire which took
place in Rome, and were put to death in various locations around
the city, including the Colosseum and its environs. This
celebration also commemorates some of the earliest Popes,
successors of St. Peter, all of whom were martyrs. The names of the
first three are in the Roman Canon of the Mass [Canon 1]: Linus
(67-76), Anacletus or Cletus (76-88) and Clement (88-97).
Historical details of the lives of these early Bishops of Rome are
uncertain and they are no longer celebrated individually in the
Calendar, as they were prior to the 1970 reforms.

BOOK OF THE WEEK

"On Conscience," by Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger. Ignatius Press. 1991.
-
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/ref=noism/1586171607/christianspiritu/

The Cardinal (now Pope Benedict XVI) writes that conscience is not
infallible. People are not free to do whatever they want --
murder, steal, lie -- even if their conscience approves. Because
there is moral truth, right and wrong, conscience is not invallible.

Conscience can be mistaken because there IS moral truth; some
things are right and some are wrong. There has to be a way to know
the difference and judge rightly what is good and what is evil.

The Cardinal answers the question, "How do we know the truth that
our conscience should follow?" How do we correct a mistaken
conscience? The shared experience of the community and what God
has revealed have to be the two determining factors in forming
conscience.

Contrary to what some civic leaders say today, "It is OK to do
everything we can do," the Cardinal makes it very clear that "we
should NOT do everthing we can do. Just because it is possible
does not make it the right thing to do."

SPIRITUAL ENRICHMENT RESOURCE

"Here Now in Love: the roots of contemplative spirituality"
by Philip St. Romain

An uncomplicated but significant collection of principles that will
help foster a contemplative focus in one's spiritual life. This
book is built on the conviction that if we are to know God, then we
must be where God is, or we will miss him; we must also strive to
be as God or we will not recognize him. This is not a new
spirituality but a common vocation of us all: To love God with our
whole heart and soul and mind and strength and our neighbor as
ourselves.

JOKE OF THE WEEK

"Give me a sentence about a public servant," said the teacher.

The small boy wrote: "The fireman came down the ladder pregnant."

The teacher took the lad aside to correct him. "Don't you know what
pregnant means?" she asked.

"Sure," said the young boy, confidently. "Means carrying a child."
