SPIRITUAL ENRICHMENT RESOURCE

"Here Now in Love: the roots of contemplative spirituality"
by Philip St. Romain

An uncomplicated but significant collection of principles that will
help foster a contemplative focus in one's spiritual life. This
book is built on the conviction that if we are to know God, then we
must be where God is, or we will miss him; we must also strive to
be as God or we will not recognize him. This is not a new
spirituality but a common vocation of us all: To love God with our
whole heart and soul and mind and strength and our neighbor as
ourselves.

WEEKEND READINGS
http://www.nccbuscc.org/nab/

Saturday: 2 Chr 24:17-25; Ps. 89:4-5, 29-30, 31-32, 33-34;
Mt 6:24-34
Sunday: Jer 20:10-13; Ps 69:8-10, 14, 17, 33-35; Rom
5:12-15; Mt 10:26-33

R. (14c) Lord, in your great love, answer me.

For your sake I bear insult,
and shame covers my face.
I have become an outcast to my brothers,
a stranger to my children,
Because zeal for your house consumes me,
and the insults of those who blaspheme you fall upon me.

I pray to you, O LORD,
for the time of your favor, O God!
In your great kindness answer me
with your constant help.
Answer me, O LORD, for bounteous is your kindness;
in your great mercy turn toward me.

"See, you lowly ones, and be glad;
you who seek God, may your hearts revive!
For the LORD hears the poor,
and his own who are in bonds he spurns not.
Let the heavens and the earth praise him,
the seas and whatever moves in them!"

SAINT OF THE WEEK

- June 28th. St. Irenaeus.

Born in about 130, probably in Smyrna (now Izmir, Western Turkey),
where as a youth he would have known the martyr Bishop St. Polycarp
who himself had known St. John the Evangelist. After study at Rome,
Irenaeus was invited to Lyons by Pothinus, first bishop of the
city. Irenaeus' name means "man of peace", and such he was; his
services were often in demand as a reconciler and maintainer of
unity even in causes for which he had little personal sympathy.
Irenaeus is an important theologian; his "Against the Heresies",
despite its rather forbidding title, is a beautiful exposition of
Christian theology, and he played an important part in establishing
the teaching - for too long obscured in Western tradition - that
through the Incarnation of Christ, humans are "made divine". He
died in 200; traditionally he is venerated as a martyr, though
there is little solid evidence for that.

BOOK OF THE WEEK

"Birth of a Church," by Father Joseph Nangle OFM. Orbis, 2004.

This is the story of a middle-class parish, Most Holy Name in Lima,
Peru, which made an option for the poor and rediscovered the
Gospel, with the help of a dedicated Franciscan. One of the first
discoveries of this thirty-one year old priest who had in 1964
already marked four years of his six years of priesthood in a
Bolivian mission, found the three classes he was to pastor in Lima:
domestic servants, middle and upper class, and caretakers (workers
on building sites in the parish. He was intent of being a servant
to each class and worked to fill their needs.

Moved by the documents of Vatican II and the MedeUin Conference,
Father Nangle was often to step on the toes of the upper class and
lose their membership as he preached untiringly the option for the
poor. He struggled to set aside his own privileged status as an
educated and affluent American priest and to identify with the poor.

With the help of his religious brothers, some American Sisters, and
his bishop, Father Nangie was able to establish a model parish
based on the Gospel. His own spirituality deepened and after
fifteen years he returned to the States and endeavored to apply the
lessons and insights he had learned in Peru. He tried in a Virginia
parish to inculcate how justice needed to be done. Through some
successes and some failures, his new parish also learned how to
make Gospel-based decisions.

JOKE OF THE WEEK

- Frame of Reference

The math teacher saw that little Johnny wasn't paying attention in
class. She called on him and said, "Johnny! What are 4, 2, 28 and
44?"

Little Johnny quickly replied, "NBC, CBS, HBO, and the Cartoon
Network!"

- Cute Little Vase

A guy goes to a girl's house for the first time, and she shows him
into the living room. She excuses herself to go to the kitchen to
get them some snacks and drinks. As he's standing there alone, he
notices a cute little vase on the mantle.

He picks it up, and as he's looking at it, she walks back in. He
says, "What's this?"

She says, "Oh, my father's ashes are in there."

He turns beet red in horror and goes, "Geez, oh . . . I . . ."

She says, "Yeah, he's too lazy to go to the kitchen to get an
ashtray."
