SAINT OF THE WEEK

- June 16th. Saints Cyricus & Julitta.

Julitta was a widow from Iconium (now Konya, Turkey) who took her
young son Cyricus, aged 3, south to Tarsus to escape the
persecution of the Emperor Diocletian (304) but was recognised and
betrayed; both were put to death. Cyricus' fame as a child martyr
was widespread and immediate, sometimes divorced from that of his
mother, however. Cyricus' popularity was most marked in France,
which received some relics of him brought back from Antioch by the
4th century bishop Amator of Auxerre. His name was rendered as Cyr;
among other things, St-Cyr is the name of the French military
academy, the French equivalent of Sandhurst. There is also the
story of the child saint's appearance to the Emperor Charlemagne
during a hunt, when the Emperor's life was in danger from a wild
boar. The young saint offered protection to the Emperor provided he
himself were given some warm clothes. Some interpreters assumed
this meant that the Emperor should give alms to the poor, but the
Bishop of nearby Nevers, strapped for cash and with a delapidated
building to see to, shrewdly furnished another explanation of the
vision: it meant the Emperor was to pay for repairs to the roof of
Nevers Cathedral (dedicated as it was to St. Cyr). Later cathedral
authorities needing to raise cash for repairs - including our own -
have unfortunately been unable to have recourse to similar methods.
There are a number of church dedications to St. Cyricus in England:
for example, Newton St. Cyres, outside Exeter.

BOOK OF THE WEEK

"Enrique's Journey: the story of a boy's dangerous odyssey to
reunite with his mother," by Sonia Nazario. Random House, 2007.
-
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/ref=noism/0812971787/christianspiritu/

This is an exciting and novel story of an Honduran youth who braved
unrealistic dangers to be reunited to a mother who had gone to the
States to better her way of life and support her two "abandoned"
children in Honduras. The author followed the trail of the youth
through very unreal circumstances in order to find out how really
dangerous such a journey might be. Following the riders on the top
of freight trains, experiencing bandits and corrupt cops, suffering
from lack of water and food, the author proved how treacherous such
an endeavor actually was.

The two abandoned children were left with relatives and often
wondered why Mother left them. "Didn't she love us?" they queried.
Yet she did send money for their upkeep and schooling, gifts for
special events, and so often wanted to go back but felt she
couldn't because of the extreme poverty back home. When Enrique
could no longer suffer the loss of his mother, he made the
dangerous trip with only his mother's telephone number in his
pocket, and he found her. The reunion was happy but soon turned
sour for Enrique had picked up bad habits of using drugs and being
irresponsible. All was not rosy! This true story puts a human face
on the ongoing debate of immigration reform.

SPIRITUAL ENRICHMENT RESOURCE

"Here Now in Love: the roots of contemplative spirituality"
by Philip St. Romain

An uncomplicated but significant collection of principles that will
help foster a contemplative focus in one's spiritual life. This
book is built on the conviction that if we are to know God, then we
must be where God is, or we will miss him; we must also strive to
be as God or we will not recognize him. This is not a new
spirituality but a common vocation of us all: To love God with our
whole heart and soul and mind and strength and our neighbor as
ourselves.

JOKE OF THE WEEK

- Good Mood?

A police officer in a small town stopped a motorist who was
speeding down Main Street.

"But officer." the man began, "I can explain".

"Just be quiet," snapped the officer. "I'm going to let you cool
your heels in jail until the chief gets back..."

"But officer, I just wanted to say...."

"And I said to keep quiet! You're going to jail!"

A few hours later the officer looked in on his prisoner and said,
"Lucky for you that the chief is at his daughter's wedding. He'll
be in a good mood when he gets back."

"Don't count on it," answered the fellow in the cell. "I'm the
groom."
