Hello, There are some basic rules of physics we can all understand, such as “for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction”. There’s also a basic and all-too-understandable rule when it comes to feeding dogs: if you put something in one end, something comes out the other end. Poop is one of the few downsides to having a dog, from the incredible mess a young puppy can create to the everyday chore of scooping or bagging it up. But you can learn much about your dog’s health from their poop, particularly their dietary health. To help you analyze what exits your dog, we’ve borrowed
these handy graphics from 5-star-rated fresh dog food brand The Farmer’s Dog. They were created in consultation with three veterinarians and illustrate perfectly what poop should and shouldn’t be like, and what different appearances might mean.
The first illustration
is on form, odor and consistency — you don’t want dry, small pellets, nor do you want diarrhea or soft blobs (especially with a nauseating stench). It should scoop up cleanly and have a bearable smell.
The second looks at the color of your dog’s poop. As you know, there’s a ghastly
rainbow when it comes to stool color, so this graphic gives you clues as to what each color might mean.
