A reader requested information about the current new respiratory symptoms, so the following comes from multiple sources of holistic veterinarians.

First, Cornell University sees three categories, one mild, self resolving-non-responvie to antibiotics; one with lingering cough, non-responsive to antibiotics, and the last is a rapidly fatal pneumonia, non-responsive to antibiotics. Thank goodness for holistic approaches which seem very successful. Please, if you do not yet have a holistic vet - get one. Read this article for how to find and work with one. If you are stuck - set up an appointment with me to help you.

The media, as it often does - exaggerates.   USA Today shameless headlined it as “fatal,” even though that’s the exception.

One veterinarian feels it is likely to be all COVID fallout affecting the dogs that live with us now, interesting  that China is reporting severe suspected mycoplasma pneumonia (fatalities apparently too) in children.  No organisms have been isolated and interestingly no cough at all in these human cases. Dogs are our protectors.

Several cases seen in New Zealand. One was a second opinions after poor prognosis at specialists was a 12 week old pup with severe pneumonia seen a year or more age, then recently a second opinion for a 16yr old spaniel diagnosed with collapsing bronchus.  Both responded well to a well selected and individualized homeopathic medicine (Phosphorus) that apparently fit most of the modalities and characteristics for each one. No organisms were cultured. With other cases, this veterinarian may reach for her more general upper respiratory prescription ("kennel cough") -
a single divided dose MorganBach 30C followed by kennel cough 30C nososde daily for 3 days.

A New York veterinarian thinks one presented, though state vets had not reported any in NY. A 16 year old pug had been playing with a dog with 'kennel cough', became very ill presenting with very serious lung sounds. He got Chinese herbal Gan Mao ling.  Several days later his lungs were 90 % better although still occasion cough.  She added  some herbs known to have effect against mycolasma which I think they are thinking might be the 'cause'.

Thinking about the pockets where this illness is being seen, there may be relation to smoke irritation from the summer fires.

Most importantly, when fear crops up for you, focus on loving every second with your cherished companions.

WINTER WOES

Check out this article for more details, and be creative in finding solutions for these holiday and winter challenges.

Your busyness – how will you create time with each of your companions this year? Do a physical.  Ask for help.

Other stresses – Noises, visitors’ stresses, people spending the night so different rooms, smells, too much attention, too little attention, emotions of everyone.

Possible dangers
Doors – Kids and visitors may let animals out
Holiday decorations
Foods, plants, antifreeze

Check-in, Checkup

Since pets can’t exactly articulate if they’re feeling bad, so it’s up to you to take notice.

Arthritis
For some animals, winter is the worst time for joint pains.

For more on arthritis, check out the forum at Holistic Actions – you can search and read for free, or become a member and post your concerns.
Schedule a coaching call with me if it persists.

Itchy skin
This is a common problem in the winter for both pets and their parents: dry, itchy skin. Check this article  at my site.

Healthy animals rarely have many skin problems and can tolerate a wider range of climates.

Intelligent Threads
Rarely do I really push products yet this is one that I feel rather strongly about for any kind of pains, including arthritis & maybe itchiness. This fall, at the AHVMA conference, a friend dragged me over to a booth as they were mostly packed up and said I must buy the socks. They seemed to help me a bit.  It was not dramatic. In 2 minutes my veterinary friend with  severe non-responsive plantar fasciitis was pain free.

I have spoken with several veterinarians who have had great success with the pet products over the last 10 years.

Booties & Feet
If thick fur – no need
Get good fit if they are needed

Wipe feet

Clothing
Jackets, leggings, hats and more.
For outdoor wear waterproof is smart.

More severe cold weather problems

Hypothermia
In 35 years of practice with animals from all over the world, I never had any with frostbite or hypothermia.

Symptoms include shivering, weakness, lethargy, non-responsiveness, heart changes, depression and temperature below 95.

Frostbite
The symptoms of frostbite depend on how far it has progressed.

Bring inside apply warm water. If any pain, do not massage that area. Head to the vet if concerned.

Antifreeze
While less toxic antifreezes are now available (added bitters or propylene glycol rather than ethylene glycol), they are less used than I previously thought, so antifreeze poisoning is still fairly common when it comes to household pets and can be fatal. An article in 2022 said, “The Humane Society Legislative Fund estimates that at least 10,000-90,000 animals die each year from antifreeze poisoning.”

Small amounts, but not just one lick, are toxic – ½ teaspoon per pound. This would be ½ a shot glass for a 20# dog. The sweet taste of typical antifreeze attracts many different mammals and leaky cars are common.

First you will notice your dog acting drunk - head straight to vet and call your holistic veterinarian immediately as well, for deeper energetic treatments may be needed for complete recovery.

Prepare for blizzard/evacuation/ power outages
GPS dog collar may be good anytime of year.
