Many of you reading this now have incredibly wonderful, holistic veterinarians, with whom you’ve been working for decades. Even more of you have struggled to find a holistic veterinarian with whom to work, virtually or in person. If you have not yet even started trying to find a holistic veterinarian you may become totally frustrated with that attempt. It is worth persisting. This is a top priority equal to learning an energy healing modality to help your animals yourself. The free article with web links goes into detail as to how to find one or more veterinarians and other NOW, who share your view on health for animals. Please share this link with everyone you know with cherished companions.

Who are these wonderful veterinarians you seek? How did they break out of the narrow conventional channel (definitely great for emergencies and acute problems). What do they now offer you and your animals? The annual conference of the American Holistic Veterinary Medical Association (AHVMA.org) gives us a window into where we are now as a body of holistic veterinarians. This one was was attended by over 400 veterinarians, students and technicians who listened to leading edge speakers on many topics, networked with each other, learned from the 100 or so vendors about ways to help animals heal gently and permanently, learned about local herbs on a walk, did Tai Chi in the morning, visited the R&R (rest and recuperation) room manned by the Council of Elders, and so much more. Learning more about the commitment and dedication needed to produce healings for animals, people and even the planet hopefully will give you a perspective and appreciation for yours.

Town and Country hotel is one of my favorites, with some rooms having little gardens in front of them, which helped me relax with early morning meditations, as did others.

These show the variety of topics integrative veterinarians were learning about to heal your pets and keep themselves healthy enough to serve your whole family (see entire program at www.AHVMA.org – tab for conference):
  • Introductions to integrative medicine for newbies, homeopathy, laser, quantum healing, chiropractic, acupuncture, Food Therapy, five element medicine and raw feeding
  • Quantum biology, which was very well attended
  • Digestive system – insect proteins for diet, leaky gut, anxiety as a cause, microbiome research and uses for pain, nerve problems and more. TCVM Food Therapy for health as well as specific illnesses.
  • Sports medicine – laser, geriatric exercises, labs on spinal treatments, other neurologic problems, arthritic pain, cruciate ligaments
  • Gemstones for people and animals wellbeing
  • TCVM (traditional Chinese veterinary medicine) for autoimmune disease, skin, myositis, leaky gut & nerve inflammation. TCVM with other modalities for discs, heart, liver, kidneys, stress, neurologic issues, geriatric, and anxiety. Five element approach in general and for edema and seizures.
  • Essential oils for dogs, cats & horses, alone or to enhance other approaches.
  • Homeopathy for acute problems, help with surgery & pain, hospice and gut issues
  • Cannabis and medicinal mushrooms for many conditions, including cancer
  • One whole track was on anti-aging approaches
  • Herbal medicine for teeth, eyes and geriatrics.
  • Ozone therapy
  • Healthy mental and emotional states in the veterinary clinic – play, corporate practices, body language.

Thirty veterinarians attended the two days of the Academy of Veterinary Homeopathy held before and during the AHVMA conference, listening to deep principles of healing.
  • Homeopathic treatment with successful results for cancer, tumors, epilepsy, fear and aggression was covered by excellent speakers
  • Descriptions and use of different remedies including the bowel nosodes, Placenta humana and the Lac remedies explored new areas to many attendees

Some attendees stayed for the rest of the conference and the AVH booth had many veterinarians and students visit who were interested in learning this modality.

This is very different from a conventional conference. One I spoke at last year had around 1500 veterinarians, 700 students, 2500 technicians, shelter and other staff attending. 35 tracks included talks on:
  • Anesthesia,
  • Surgery,
  • Shelters,
  • Behavior,
  • Systems (cardiology, dermatology, dentistry…),
  • Diseases (diabetes, cancer),
  • Non-pet (equine, livestock, exotic),
  • Business
  • Only two general - One Health and Integrative.

Note that the whole animal, the family, the energy field, quantum physics, true healing is not covered. Your holistic veterinarian was trained in all these areas in veterinary school and is not limited to these narrow approaches. Partly I share this so you can be more understanding when you must go to a conventional doctor who just has no idea what is possible in the healing realm. They are limited. Therefore you must have a complete healing team and do a lot of learning yourself.

Just as every animal and person is unique in their response to different healing modalities, each holistic veterinarian seems to gravitate to different ways to support the body in healing itself. So you may need different doctors to support each of your animals on their healing journey. You can now be understanding if your homeopathic veterinarian does not know about the western herbs you want to use. In addition to the annual AHVMA and AVH conferences, there are annual conferences sponsored by most organizations on chiropractic/physical manipulation, different approaches to Chinese medicine, western herbal and more - just like the now overwhelming number of summits you can attend on different ways to keep your animals healthy. Every day away from their practice and family can be a challenge, so most can attend one or two a year.

As conventional veterinarians we are basically given a cookbook – if the symptoms are these, first do these tests, then give these medications. Most of the medications are antis, designed to stop the symptoms, or replacement ones that assume the organ, like a thyroid, is permanently broken. When they attend some of the introductory sessions, listen to a summit, really hear when a client shares a good result, they start thinking differently. If you live where you must use a conventional doctor for diagnostics and a virtual team of healers/veterinarians, please gently encourage them to come to an introductory session, read the IVC Journal (you can too), or other holistic information you have learned. Find other pet parents in your town who think like you and show the doctor she can make money once trained in holistic approaches. There is a need. Set up zoom or in-person classes (I and others can teach them).

Some holistic vets, especially early in their journey, may use herbs, needles, remedies, physical manipulation in this cookbook format. Others understand the whole health paradigm from the start. As they continue to attend, most become more and more deeply wholistic. One question to ask potential vets is if they attend conferences. One of your tasks, to provide the best care for your family, is to work diligently to really learn the total mind/body/spirit paradigm yourself, so when any healer is focusing merely on one symptom you can ask if they can work on the whole.
